About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover Illustration: Crystal packing interactions between full length Escherichia coli SSB (cyan) and its symmetry-related molecules (yellow). The structure of full length E.coli SSB has revealed that its thus far elusive C-terminal domain cannot be visualised crystallographically even in the presence of ssDNA, indicating that this part of the molecule either adopts several distinct conformations and/or that it is highly unstructured. Pronounced cavities in the crystal packing (indicated by dotted red circles) at both sides of the tetrameric SSB protein, suggest that the C-terminal domains may emanate laterally away from the core of the structure (at points indicated with white asterisks). Taken together, this is the first experimental evidence that the C-terminal domain of SSB may be inherently disordered. (See Savvides et al., pp.1942-1947.)
