Cover Illustration: Glucose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase catalyzes the formation of UDP-glucose from glucose-1-phosphate and UTP. Not surprisingly, given the pivotal role of UDP-glucose in galactose utilization, in glycogen synthesis, and in the synthesis of the carbohydrate moieties of glycolipids, glycoproteins, and proteoglycans, the enzyme is widely distributed in nature. Shown here is a ribbon representation of the structure of the tetrameric enzyme from Escherichia coli. (See Thoden et al., pp. 432.)
