Cover Illustration: Vitronectin is a glycoprotein found both in the circulation and in the extracellular matrix. The cysteine-rich somatomedin B domain from vitronectin is responsible for the interaction of this protein with the serpin PAI-1 and the protease receptor uPAR. The structure of this complex domain has long been controversial. Shown is an artistic representation of the ligand-binding loop of the somatomedin B domain, based on the NMR structure reported here. The side chains of the residues that have been found to be important for the ligand binding are highlighted in blue. These side chains form a coherent hydrophobic patch on the surface of the domain.
