About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover Illustration: MHC class I molecules are localized on the surface of most cells and present peptides to CD8+ cytotoxic T-cells. Shown here are 29 superimposed HLA–A*0201 complexes with presented peptides. For the superimposition the β-sheet floors of the binding grooves were aligned. The similar backbone position of the single peptides can be seen. This is a major prerequisite for modelling new peptides into the binding groove using a side chain substitution tool. The α1 helix of the MHC is hidden to allow direct insight into the binding groove. The MHC α-chain and β2-microglobulin are shown in white while various colors indicate the backbones of the 29 peptides. (For details, see Knapp et al., pp. 977–982.)
